Can a 4 Channel Receiver Be Set Up To Have Surround Sound Capabilities? Kevin Shen 07-06-2006
Dear Sir/Madam:

I've a vintage classic Sansui G6700 Receiver (circa 1980-1982- they
simply don't make receivers the way they used to; IMHO, most receivers
of today are cheaply made and don't have good components inside like
they used to, which is why I'm hanging on to this receiver). I'd
like to "bring this receiver into the 21st century" by setting it up
for a surround sound effect (or more accurately, virtual or simulated
surround sound, which is really what I'm really hoping to accomplish,
as I'm well aware that for true surround sound, one will need
components that is specifically designed for this).

This receiver has 4 channels (2 pairs of 2 stereo channels). For the
5th channel (the center front speaker needed for surround sound), can
the front channel pair of speakers (for the 1st stereo pair of
channels) be wired in serial with this 5th channel speaker? By doing
this, will this have a surround sound effect? Will such a serial
connection of these 3 speaker channels (of the center 5th channel wired
with the front channel speakers) work or not?

I know that this is an unusual (or some may say crazy- forgive me, if
you think that this is so) question for this newsgroup, but I'm really
curious if this set up will work properly for a surround sound like
effect. If this will NOT work, I'd like to know (and vice versa).
I'd very greatly appreciate any advice, information, guidance, or
insight regarding my question.

Sincerely,

Kevin Shen
