Again projectorcentral.com to the rescue with a good explanation

http://www.projectorcentral.com/anyplace_projection.htm

This article is dated almost exactly 2 years ago, but gives a good
explanation of the problem and the various approaches taken by the
manufacturers to solve the problem.

It is BEST if the projector is CENTERED on the exact top to bottom left
to right center of the screen.

But that can mean that it is too easy for someone to bump their head on
the projector when they walk under a suspended projector, its too easy
to block the image when someone walks between the projector and the
screen, its UGLY to have the projector hanging down/up at about 6 feet
above the floor, there's an architectural feature of the room that means
that the projector MUST sit left or right of center. All sorts of
reasons to mean that the projector will be higher or lower than exact
center, will be left or right of exact center. When the projector is
installed, we need to be as close to the exact center of the projected
image as possible to minimize distortion.
