I apologize in advance for possibly mixing up some terms or possibly
completely misusing them altogether.
I just bought a Optoma H31 projector and I think it's great. It's my
first widescreen display and even against a not so white wall, it still
has quite a nice image. Don't worry I bought a matching screen for it
too.
My issue though is that when I connect my DVD player to it, I always
thought that the 16:9 aspect ratio movies were natively 854x480 (same
as the projector), but they still display as 4:3. So to fill up the
screen I adjust the display options on the H31 to 4:3, then use a
preset feature that basically zooms the image so that the black bars on
the top and bottom are cut off. While this works fine, I notice that
since it's zooming the image, it's gets fuzzier and some digital
looking artifacts show up, especially around the edges of an object.
It's quite a bit more noticeable on something like Finding Nemo than it
is on a live action movie, say Back To The Future.
So my question is, in order to get a native 16:9 display from a DVD
player, do I need to get an HDTV upconverting one? But then because
the projector isn't HD, it still has to scale down the image anyway,
so is that a better compromise than using a normal DVD player and
getting rid of the black bars on top and bottom, i.e. zooming?
I am a newbie, go easy on me. ;-)
