Help!

I have got an older, but fairly decent GE television with ONE INPUT on the
back. One big jack where the antenna would connect.

Currently I have got the following setup:

wall -> cable -> cable box -> VCR -> TV

Now I have purchased a Denon DVD-556 DVD player and I have connected the RCA
plugs (audio L/R and Video) from the DVD player to the RCA connections
on the VCR.

When I switch the 'input' on the VCR remote from aux (IIRC) to 'Line', I
can see the DVD picture and hear the DVD sound. (so far so good)

Unfortunately, the brightness level is constantly going UP and DOWN.
Bright enough to have a FANTASTIC picture, then slowly dimming down to
where I can barely see the picture at all...

It does this with both the movie picture, and any text/DENON Graphics on
screen.

When I switch the 'input' back to 'AUX', I can watch cable TV with no
problems.

I looked in the DVD manual and it says 'to connect to a tv without
audio/video input jacks' I need a Stereo Audio/Video RF Modulator.

Before I go buy one, I've three questions:

1. What is causing the brightness level to go up and down?

2. Will the RF Modulator correct it?

3. How do I connect the Cable line, the cable box, the DVD, the VCR and
the TV?

Thanks SO MUCH for any help. I am a bit 'old school' as far as
technology (tv/cable wise anyway) and I can use the help.
