I live in northeast Massachusetts and am building a two story 700 sq
ft. addition to my 1,100 to 1,200 sq. ft. home. I plan to install a
high efficiency non-catalytic wood stove on the ground floor of the
addition. There will be one floor/ceiling vent in the ceiling where the
stove is, as well as an open space on the rest of the ground floor of
the existing house. This way (I am thinking), the heat will travel up
the central stairwell. The addition will be insulated; the rest of the
house isn't (except the attic, which has blow in cellulose
insulation).
I need advice on calculating the size of stove to buy. I would much rather
go a little small than too large. Do I simply add the existing square
footage to the new and buy a stove that is rated for that amount of
space? Seems too simple.
Also, I am strongly considering a Jotul F 118 Black Bear stove. Does
anyone have practical experience with this model? Dependable? Long
lasting (Jotul offers only a 5-year guarantee)? Are there other makes
you can suggest that are very well-made and efficient?
Thanks very much for your time and assistance.
