Power glitches on 1/2 of the house.. How??? Rick F 07-20-2006
Hi all..

In our house we bought about 4 years ago, we've recently had occasional
power glitches on 1/2 of the house consisting of multiple circuits.
This particular part of the house was remodeled about 13 years ago and
had lots of electrical work done at the time including an upgraded new
panel (200A). When this glitch happens, they're long enough to reset
clocks and our TiVO DVR completely.. Most of the time when they occur
during the day it may not last quite long enough to cause any clock
resets -- however, at night with the lights on, it's more obvious
what's being effected. I know for a fact that all of the circuits
effected are NOT on a single breaker but on multiple breakers. My
first thought that was perhaps some sort of critter was chewing on the
wires, but if that was the case, it would be VERY unlikely that they
would be able to manipulate the power on 4-6 breakers at a time
simultaneously. So, I ruled that out (we've not seen or heard any
evidence of anything like that either)...

The only other thought I have got is that perhaps we've got an issue with
one of the two main wires coming into our panel from the "pole" (which
in our case is underground -- no overhead wires to speak of) such as
perhaps a loose cable clamp in our panel or similar.. Unfortunately,
with our panel being of the dual-width variety (meter on the left, very
tall and all breakers on the right 1/2 of the panel), I am unable to see
where those cables clamp into the panel's internal busses without
breaking a power company (SCE) safety seal...

So, can anyone think of any other possible way that only 1/2 of my
house could be seeing these power outages? They're currently happening
at 6-10 times per day.. My wife had me get up this morning at 2:30am to
figure out why our down-draft kitchen vent fan was running at
full-speed for no reason -- so, I shut off the breaker for it.. After
that, I was told that we had 2 more outages -- one in the 4am time
frame and another around 5:40 or so.. I am tempted to pester SCE about
it to see if they can put something on the line to see if it's on their
end or not.. Any other ideas?

TIA
