You need to connect the new switch exactly the SAME as the old switch was
connected. And if the old switch has 3 connections, the new switch should be
the same - 3 connections. Or if old switch had 2 connections, new switch
needs to have two connections.
You might call an electrician if you cannot remember how it was connected.
In the future, might want to make a diagram of how things are connected
before disconnecting the wires or take a picture so you can remember..
