When I was involved with Berkut (a kit plane), we had a clause in the
contract that if the kit was sold, we would continue to provide
customer support if we were paid a transfer fee. I think it was $250,
but it's been too long to remember.

I think - but I am not certain - that Nat Puffer did not provide
builder support if plans were resold, regardless if there was a
project or not. This is the first time I have heard of something like
you describe with John.

(NB- John is a bit of a curmudgeon, but I both like him and respect
him a lot.)
