I believe you are absolutely correct about the noise. Most generators
are so loud that they'll probably drive your neighbors nuts in just a
few hours, especially if you have a small lot.

Buying a generator requires some serious compromises. One has to think
about need versus want. Remember also, the bigger the generator the
more fuel it's going to take.
I started out with the idea that I needed about 12 KW and wound up
buying the 3KW, Honda EU3000is. You can probably run a TV or a computer
and a refrigerator and a gas furnace and lights with 3000W.
I bought the wheel kit with it to make it easier to move around in the
shed and when I move it out of the shed I use a hand cart.
The Honda EU3000 is one of the quietest generators on the market and
has the following specs:
Fuel Tank Capacity: 3.4 gallons
Run time on one Tankful: 7.2 hrs at rated load, 20 hrs @ 1/4 load.
Noise level: 58 db @ rated load, 49 db @ 1/4 load.

If you absolutely must have more power, my recommendation would be the
Honda EM5000isAB or the Honda EM7000isAB. They are relatively quiet
also, but much louder than the EU3000is.

There are generator conversion kits available, but I do not know how
well they work.
