Yes, in California, where I'm, it is $800, regardless of profit or loss. I
have to pay it for my home business. The attendant issues of corporate
personhood are more problematic such as insurance, liability, CPA fees, lawyer
fees, etc.

Update: I attended the meeting tonight. Many more people than the, er...
instigators expected as neighbors that got invites invited neighbors that
didn't. About 40 people. (I myself brought 6 uninvited homeowners.)

I think the instigators were a bit blindsided by the anti-HOA reaction of at
least 50% of the people there, and also the anger of the non-invited attendees.
I made point that the cherry-pickedness of the invitees was rather shady. The
next step is a larger meeting at the library after notification of ALL
homeowners (which I and others insisted on.)

I think based on post-meeting feedback I managed to maintain a calm and rational
yet persuasive attitude, a struggle given my strong opinion on the issue. The
naivety of the instigators was a bit troubling, they had pretty much no idea
that an HOA would have to be a legal corporate entity, with all the attendant
costs.

There are some legitimate concerns about a few of the houses/residents in the
neighborhood, most of which are city ordinance violations anyway. I think the
instigators' intentions were good, but they were naive about the propensity for
abuse that HOAs engender. Yes, we all dislike the ratty house with the peeling
paint and weedy yard. But that is not where it will stop.

Our CCRs go so ludicrously far as to state that garage doors cannot be open for
more than 30 minutes. An open garage door is the accepted signal in our
neighborhood that drop-by neighbor visits are welcome! Most interaction happens
when the door is open and people are puttering in the garage or yard.

Anyway before I go off on even more of a rant, much thanks to you and others for
the advice and links.
