I called an exterminator service when I had this problem. They
inspected all around the roofline, found the hole under the eaves
where the squirrels were getting in, installed a one-way door over the
hole, waited about a week to make sure the squirrels were really gone,
covered the holes with squirrel-proof hardware cloth to keep them out
for good, and put down some squirrel repellent on their access paths
to discourage them from coming back to start chewing another hole.
You can do all this yourself if you want, but I live in a 3-story
townhouse and wasn't too keen on doing all that ladder work myself.
