This post omits likely sources:
1. In some places, animals such as squirrels or
raccoons can move in (and die and stink.) In other
places this does not happen.
2. All ordinary houses have a "stack vent" to exhaust
sewer gas, usually above roof level. The vent can
be blocked, but this is rare. More often, local climatic
conditions prevent the sewer gases from dispersing the
way they usually do.
