I had the Hoover WindTunnel Self-Propelled Ultra. The self-propelled
feature is very nice, especially considering that this model is quite
heavy. However, on mine and on a friend's who had the same model, the
feature did not always work well -- sometimes worked fine, sometimes
did not.
The vacuum did a very good job, but I felt it needed a lot of upkeep
(multiple filters, belts, brush roller) in comparison to other uprights
I have owned. It had by FAR the most knuckle busting, difficult to
change belt I've ever experienced. Extending the hose (i.e., to use
the tools) tended to cause the vacuum to tip over, minor but very
irritating.
Both my friend's and mine broke down in a relatively short length of
time (hers in less than a year, mine in about three years), considering
the initial cost. Both of us were told by separate repair centers that
the model was known for breaking down and being expensive to fix. I
ended up replacing mine because the cost to fix it would have bought a
new (less expensive) vacuum. I did not choose the same model a second
time, but this was mostly because I moved and wanted to switch to a
canister vac. Not sure I'd have chosen the Hoover again even if
I would wanted an upright, though. I probably would have checked out the
Kenmore, since I really liked the self-propelled feature.
My son has a Hoover bagless and really likes this feature. He carries
it out to the garage to dump it to avoid the mess in the house, which I
would find a hassle. I do not mind the bags, personally, but I'd
definitely buy them online and not pay Hoover's incredible $3 a bag
price.
