Should I fix my Weil McLain oil burner? Tony 11-08-2006
The house I moved into 2 years ago was built in 1977 and has a Weil McLain oil
burner.My friend says
these are great burners and can last a lifetime. However, a few weeks back I was
having a few
problems. There was scortching hot water coming out of a pipe and I had to
replace the relief valve.
Then, I also had to replace the expamsion tank. All was good for a week when I
started smelling
sulpher-like odors in the house. When I walked outside, my neighbors informed me
that there was dark
soot coming out of the chimney. I called an oil burner guy in and he had to
change the valve and
clean out the soot. He said he had to put in a smaller valve at first so that
the soot doesnt back
up into my house and then he would come back and put the correct sized valve in,

He came back today to do that but told me that the chamber needs to be replaced.
He showed me and it
looked like a rusted, burnt piece of tin with a rip going down the middle of it.
He said that if I
don't replace it, eventually, the soot will return. It would cost $500 to do
this. He said I've
time but I shouldnt wait too long or the back of the bhamber could collapes in.

Is it worth putting $500 into a 29 year old burner?

Any idea how long this will last if I get the chamber?

I don't plan on living here more than 5 years. Should I just go and buy a
cheaper burner?
