50-year-old house, moved in last August
At this point the basement has no walls, just the masonry-block
foundation. I have put Tom Cat bait chunks along the sill plates, and
they're getting knocked down. Some seem otherwise untouched; some
have had corners eaten off.
I also put traditional spring-type traps, baited with peanut butter,
on the floor in two areas where I had cleaned up droppings. Neither
trap has caught a mouse, but one had the peanut butter eaten out
without getting tripped.
This is creeping me out, and I cannot see putting up walls until the
mouse problem is solved. I have seen no activity in the living
quarters, but I figure that's only a matter of time and I want to
forestall that.
1. Is there anything else I can reasonably try before calling an
exterminator?
2. I am assuming an exterminator *can* solve this problem. Is that a
realistic assumption?
3. I cannot figure out how the mice are getting in, so I do not know
what to do to keep them out. Is that the sort of thing an
exterminator can figure out, or do I need to call a different type of
professional?
Thanks for advice (and sympathy)!
