I recently had the hot water heater replaced and at the same time an
expansion tank was installed to bring the system up to code.

Ever since, we have had a periodic (30-45 minute periods) vibration that
lasts about 30-45 seconds. The only times I have noticed it are when no one
is using the system. If I run downstairs and cut off the main, the
vibration stops and does not resume when I turn the main back on. But,
when I do turn the main on, I can here water running (slowly) for a short
period.
